And we have the beta you need to make the right call.

Momentum Climbing Gyms Houston

Like every big city, there are chain climbing gyms in Houston (it’s Movement in the Portland gym community where I climb). And here, Momentum gym rules. Membership to one this gym has the perk of being able to use either it’s Katy or Silver Street location. They also have outposts in Washington and Utah, meaning you can get a free workout if you happen to be passing by one of their other locations.

In Houston, their Katy location boasts an impressive 29,000 Square feet of both roped climbing and bouldering with over 200 routes to explore. They also offer a variety of yoga and fitness classes for those looking to cross train or change things up from time to time.

Their second location in Silver Street is a mammoth 43,000 square feet of pure bouldering. For sport climbers like myself, it sounds like a nightmare. But for all the boulders out there, it’s 280+ problems make it the premier bouldering gym in Houston. And with members only hours on Saturday mornings, you can beat the crowds and take as many laps as you want.

Texas Rock Gym

This gym is great for climbers of all levels. They put a huge emphasis on safety, accessibility, and sharing the world of climbing with others. If you’re just getting into the sport or want to climb as a fun activity for the day, this is the sport for you.

Another cool thing about this gym is the style of the walls. It takes a slight departure from what you see at typical gyms and feels a little more natural and featured — closer to what you may find outside.

For the more experienced climbers, they still have sport routes and boulder problems that will challenge you. With that said, the emphasis seems to be on teaching and growing the sport, so it may not be the best spot to really push your grade.

But for those trying to learn, this is the spot for you. With classes and tons of programs for youth (including a climbing summer camp), there is practically unlimited potential to grow your climbing skills.

Space City Climbing Gym

Space city has a simple claim to fame — their arched climbing roof. They are the only climbing gym in Houston (or Texas for that matter) with this type of feature allowing you to work those overhung skills.

With that said, Space City is on the smaller side. They have 5,000 square feet of total climbing — that’s bouldering and sport combined. It also isn’t open in the mornings (sorry for all you early birds out there). Day passes are really cheap, so if you’re stopping through town, this is a great spot. But if you’re looking for a place for long term training, you might find the amenities lacking in this gym and that there is better bang for your buck elsewhere.

inSPIRE Climbing Gym Houton

No list of Houston climbing gyms would be complete without inSPIRE. With two locations, over 40,000 square feet of climbing between them, and every amenity you could want, it blends the perks of a mega gym with the feel of a small one. A huge perk of this gym is it’s auto-belays, meaning you can get in sport climbing practice even if you don’t have a partner.

Beyond space to climb, this gym has everything you need to up your climbing skills like moon boards and campus rungs. They also have competitive climbing leagues for adults as well as kids. The last thing about this gym that really stands out is it’s olympic size speed wall. If you’ve ever wanted to see just how fast you can fly up the wall, this is the spot for you.

The only criticism here is the hours. If you’re like me and like to squeeze in that sunrise sesh from time to time, inSPIRE doesn’t have that option. But as far as everything else goes, it gets 5 stars.
